The Abingtons

Located just five miles north of the City of Scranton, Pennsylvania, the thriving Abington community is comprised of the municipalities of Clarks Summit, Clarks Green, Waverly, Dalton, Glenburn, Ransom, S. Abington, Newton, Chinchilla and N. Abington. Although separate municipalities, there is a strong bond that unites them-the pride and harmony which makes it not just a community of governments, but a community of over 20,000 friendly neighbors.

Well known for its strong sense of community and family, the area boasts an excellent school district. The Abington Heights School District was rated in the top 100 school districts in the nation by Money magazine. Recreational activities abound the area. Two important parks in the Abington area are the Lackawanna State Park and the South Abington Park and Recreation Complex.

The Lackawanna State Park, located 10 miles north of Scranton on Route 407 in Wallsville offers a variety of activities including a campground, outdoor pool, lake, boat rentals, playground, walking and hiking trails and picnic areas.- Lackawanna State Park

South Abington Township

The South Abington Park and Recreation Center is located on Northern Boulevard in Chinchilla. A favorite spot for young and old alike, this new park boasts a wonderful playground, baseball and soccer fields, basketball courts, roller blading and bike area, creek, nature trails with covered bridges, and picnic area. In the winter, the park becomes a winter wonderland with a great sledding hill, ice skating rink and outdoor pavilion with a fireplace.- South Abington Park

Abington Township

Long a fixture in the community, the Waverly Community House is open to the public and is in the center of the village. The community house has a Post Office, tennis courts, kids play ground, Attic Shop and preschool. - The Waverly Community House

Clarks Summit Borough

Downtown Clarks Summit is the commercial hub of the area. Visitors to downtown will enjoy browsing well-known stores such as Everything Natural and Talbots, as well as a variety of specialty stores. Clarks Green

The Abington Area Community Park located on the corner of Winola Rd and Grove Street has a 100 acres managed by a volunteer intergovernmental unit: the Abington Area Joint Recreation Board (AAJRB) which includes Clarks Green, Clarks Summit, Glenburn, South Abington and Waverly municipalities. This park became a thriving recreational asset due to broad community support. It features a lake stocked for fishing, handicapped-accessible fishing docks, a public pavilion with plenty of picnic tables, Abington Community Garden, Boundless Playground, nature trails for walking, Abington Dog Park, soccer and softball fields used by area youth leagues, handicapped accessible bathrooms, summer youth Earth Camp and Golf Clinic, Forever Young Kid's Fishing Derby, Abington Area Community Classroom and Walk the Lake Project.
